Akemi became popular as 明美 (bright + beautiful) entering the top 10 in Japan in 1957. It peaked at #1 in 1965 and left the top 10 after 1968.It is famous for being one of the first names not ending in -ko becoming extremely popular in the 1950s and 1960s after the Japanese top 10 had been dominated by -ko ending names for several decades and therefore changing the trend to names with different endings, a trend that would lead to hardly any names ending in -ko being placed in the top 10 by the 1990s (the only exceptions are Momoko, Nanako and Riko which entered for one year (Nanako) or a few years each).
