Asuka entered the top 10 in 1983 at #7 and then fell out again for several years. It re-entered in 1996, peaking at #1 in 1997 and falling out of the top 10 after 2000.明日香 (tomorrow + fragrance) is the most common spelling.

Asuka, used as the kanji "明日香" is currently 45th place in Japan, in terms of kanji (source: http://5go.biz/sei/cgi/ninki2.htm).
