Message: "DJANGO" - Behind the Name

We named our baby boy DJANGO as this name is not frequently used. Also we liked the exotic ring and bite it has. Unfortunately we do not know anything about its origin and meaning. Apparently it is of ROMA (Gypsy) origin, but we're not sure. A very famous gypsy jazz guitar player was DJANGO REINHARDT. Also the spaghetti westerns with DJANGO THE AVENGER were very popular. And there seems to be a DJANGU tribe of Australian aboriginals. But that's all we know. Who can tell us more about DJANGO ?

A number of different jazz websites offer the same reference as to the origin of the name of the famous Roma guitarist, Jean Baptiste "Django" Reinhardt. They state that "a reader points out that 'Django' is the Gypsy name for Jean ."

Yep, I kinda like the name Django better than the name John , too. I was surprised to discover that my life-mate (whose name is John , but he also likes Django better) happens to have some of the musician Django's music in his collection. My life-mate has very eclectic taste in music, and his collection includes the best from every genre.

This is one of my favorite names as well! It sounds gutsy and uncommon, and I commend you on your willingness to be innovative.

Unfortunately, beyond being able to confirm that it appears to be of genuinely Rroma origin (the "Dj-" is characteristic, and one Rroma tribe of the Balkans is the "Djamba"), I can't help with the meaning...even after a prolonged search on Google. Sorry!

Hmm...

I have no idea what Django means, but if it is of gypsy origin then a study of the Roma (Gypsy) language would probably lead you to the answers.
