Passive voice uses verbs like is, are, was and were.
She was sad.
Sometimes you just can't avoid a sentence like that. Try using "She felt sad," instead. The emphasis is on how she felt but both get the point across.
I kind of feel like passive voice is for telling and active voice is for showing.
