Name and age? Duane P Troxell, age 40.
Nickname – given by whom, and how? Plus Tax, given to him by his workmates because of his constant carping about the price of everything.
What is most noticeable about your character’s appearance/physical presence? How does he or she feel about it?
He walks with a decided swagger and still wears his hair in a military brush-cut. When he got out of the service he let it grow and wore a ponytail, but he decided he had outgrown that style and got it cut off short again.
Describe his or her voice, verbal ticks, pet phrases etc. Loud, country accent, always got something to say. After he's made what he thinks is a good point, and the other person is at a loss for what to say next, he will say softly "That's right." He loves getting the last word.
Describe a gesture your character makes.
Where does he or she now live? Describe the city, town or village, the house itself. Be very specific. It doesn’t have to be in Canada. Any feelings about this place?
Little town in Kentucky, little one-story house that's all paid up.
Has s/he lived elsewhere? What does s/he remember of these places? Just when he was in the Army and travelled around.
What part of her home is her favourite? Least favourite? Why. Describe, using specific details.
The living room because it's got everything he wants in it, big armchair, surround-sound system, big-screen TV.
What does your character’s bedroom/sleeping place look like? (lots of detail please)
All different shades of blue, small TV on the dresser, kept cold as ice because he thinks being cold helps you sleep better. He doesn't believe in doing stuff in the bedroom besides sleeping and sex.
What does he or she wear to sleep in? Underwear.
What does your character dream of at night?
Being rich, taking over the country.
Who are/were her parents? Rest of family? What does she feel for them? Parents died when he was nine or thereabouts, raised by his aunt and uncle. Lots of cousins, but the one he's closest to is called Gimpy, on account of his leg got all messed up when a fridge fell on him at work at Sears. He's loud and lazy and loves to talk about how he's a helpless cripple, and while he and Plus Tax are the best of friends, PT has no problem calling Gimpy a damn leech for refusing to work and living off his disability checks, which PT seems to think come straight from his personal account.
Class, ethnic group, religious background?
White, been here so long nobody knows the ethnicity. Working-class and proud of it. Raised Christian but gave it up because he thinks all churches are just about getting up in your business and trying to get hold of your money.
Who does s/he love, or has s/he loved? Or what. Detail. Melissa, a pretty blonde nurse who he was engaged to ten years ago but who cheated on him and the engagement was called off. He'd deny it, but he still is sore over it.
Who loves him or her?
Sabrina.
Married/ in relationship/single? Give names and specifics.
Sabrina is 20 years old, pretty and dark-haired with big brown eyes and dimples. He met her at the laundromat the same night he came home from his annual Army Reserve session. He was horny, she had on a thin T-shirt with no bra, so he thought he fell in love with her. He didn't know then that she is dumber than a bag of hammers. She loves him but thinks he doesn't know how to have fun. It's because of their big age difference. And he is just lazy enough and cheap enough that he would rather put up with her dimwittedness and enjoy the hot sex than go out and buy drinks and dinners and movies and have to play silly games in the hopes of getting hot sex.
How does your character feel about sex/intimacy? What sexual relationship(s) is he or she involved in?
He's a fan of sex. It's gotten him into plenty of trouble though.
Exactly what does your character do to make a living (or in the case of a child, what do his/ her parents do; or in the case of independent wealth, how does he or she pass the time?)? How much does s/he earn? Feelings about work? What is the best part of the job, the worst?
He works for a septic company, installing, maintaining and repairing the tanks. He also does HVAC. He looks down on men who work "clean" office jobs or who he thinks are overeducated. He makes decent money but hates the smells and the mess.
Who or what does/he fear?
Democrats, minorities, tax hikes, government regulations.
What about his or her life would he or she change if s/he could? He says not.
Does the character have a hobby? Secret passion? (Can be something ordinary like soccer playing or yoga classes or mountain biking or sewing or fixing up old trucks - or an unusual interest like some Greek poet from the third century, or collecting spiders, or walking the tightrope…
Likes to go to the Boot Scoot at a local country bar, wins line-dancing contests.
What would be his or her favourite smell ( why)? Clean laundry, clean house, hot supper.
What kind of shoes does he or she wear, (e.g. furry slippers or gumboot or trainers… new or old, style, what colour, fitting properly or too tight or too loose, nice and clean or old and smelly)? Describe exactly.
Work boots, mostly, western boots for Boot Scoot nights.
Favourite meal? Attitude to food? Big appetite. Spaghetti and meatballs is his favorite meal, followed by fried chicken or pork chops.
Favourite clothes?
Jeans, clean and ironed shirts.
What is the worst thing that could happen to him or her right now?
According to him, having something break and cost a lot of money to fix.
What vehicles does your character use/own? (for example: bike, skateboard, truck, yacht, stroller, canoe, spaceship, battered pickup, etc.. please be as exact as possible). What are his/her feelings towards it/them. What kind of journeys does he or she make? Big-ass pickup truck, well-maintained and all paid off.
What is his or her most treasured possession?
The truck?
What illnesses has he or she suffered, if any?
What’s his/her philosophy of life? For example’ You’ve got to look after Number 1’ or ‘Never say die’ or ‘Don’t ask for reasons.” What are his or her most strongly held beliefs? "My way or the highway" and "Look out for numero uno."
What does he or she feel guilty about? He will never admit to feeling guilty. But if you keep pushing he may say tantalizingly and with a rather scary smile, referring to his time in Desert Storm "What happens in the desert, stays in the desert."
Biggest mistake ever made? Letting his little head do the thinking for him and taking up with the pretty, sweet, but ditzy and expensive Sabrina.
Best thing he/she ever did? Getting a vasectomy before he even had any kids.
What, right now, does your character want most of all? His or her deepest desire – a glass of water, to get out of her marriage, a new pair of shoes, peace and quiet…
A hot supper, a football game on TV, and no silly chatter or nagging.
