Katherine Banks, known as Kitty to herself, mostly, is 36 years old and works in the mail room of the Whitford Group. She has a college degree in political science but has never worked in that field, and has worked in the mail room for not quite seven years.
She lives in a studio apartment with her cat Basil and a huge collection of the Bakeshop Mysteries and Gorgeous Gourmets romance novels.
Kitty is five foot five with brown hair that she's dissatisfied with but is afraid to color, pretty blue eyes hidden behind overly thick glasses, and a nervous, fretful disposition. She tends to wear colors and patterns that remind her of childhood, which might explain the rainbow-striped velour pullover she has on now.
Her best friend is the worldly Samantha Tillman, a costume designer and theater actress. She admires Sam's confidence and flamboyance, and doesnt' realize that Sam often treats her a bit condescendingly, like a dorky younger sister.
Kitty hasn't had a real boyfriend since college, but right now she is madly in love with Lance, an up-and-coming young public-relations guy at the Whitford Group. They've only ever seen each other in the parking garage or the elevator, and he's never said more to her than a bland "Good morning" or "Goodbye" but Kitty has this whole fantasy built up about how he is just waiting to ask the mousy mail-room girl to dinner, and how his $400 Italian shoes will look parked next to her futon.
