Beatles slash is just bizarre, at least with Lawrence there is some kind of biographical basis. I actually came across a rather convincing imitation of the style of The 7 Pillars of Wisdom, only it was extremely graphic.

As for Nathan's reaction :

"Cholera!" Nathan muttered under his breath, wiping his mouth. The sound of Sam's footsteps still echoed in his mind. Who could have thought the scruffy English soldier boy was a--? He could hardly say it to himself Nathan remembered the times he had playfully nudged Sam in the ribs or grabbed him by the hair, as he was in the habit of doing with any of his friends. Now it occurred to him that, when they had been to the beach with Nora, that Sam had stared at Nathan a little too intently when he had come out of the water. But then maybe it wasn't so surprised after all. Englishmen had such inclinations--it was a known fact. Still, it was something he would have expected of the foppish affected ones, with their years in public schools and colleges, not of Sam Parnells, with his lace curtain-Irish family and his Catholic education.
