--But we aren't going to give it just to spare somebody's feelings.

True. Whose we? Are you writing for more than one person? You don't have to spare my
feelings,I understand people are different than me, and that's okay.

--If a piece of writing is bad, we're not going to say "Oh, that's wonderful, what a good job!"

Why would you say it's wonderful if it is not? also how do you know a piece of writing is bad, it could be good in the future or not,how can you predict? I see there are a lot of mistakes in books as well.

--That's something you might do for a toddler.

I would hope so but some people don't praise their kids or worse....

-- Somebody old enough to write and share it with others and ask for their opinions should have enough pride to not want pat-on-the-head praise, and to want to improve their writing so others can take pleasure in reading it.

Fair enough.

--Also, whether it's fair or not, if a person writes sloppily, as if they can't be bothered to make sense, well, what are we supposed to think about that person?

Well, judgements, the thing about them is that is that the other people will judge you on your your response as well...It goes both ways...
I don't know what you are suppose to think.... if someone writes sloppily, I probably think that at least they bothered to write something. Maybe not well written, but every piece has something good about it as well. If it doesn't make sense, Not sure about this, I can understand most piece of writings unless the words are not spelled correctly or so bad it's unrecognizable but I don't judge them because I don't have a need to judge but I can if I wanted to.

The writer may claim she's really smart and organized and conscientious, and it might well be true.

I never claim I was smart, organized or conscientious, what is this? A platform for public debate. Are you going to be the next president? haha

--But if she is so smart and all that, why not write that way?

True, for some people writing is not easy.If they knew how to write, they probably be best selling authors by now...

--Why should anybody believe her when her writing so clearly says otherwise?

Um okay...
