Maybe he's a follower and follows the wrong people? Like he went along when his friends decided to rough up some rivals?
Maybe he likes to pretend to himself that he doesn't know what's going on? Like maybe he agreed to deliver a package somewhere and collect money and the package was drugs or weapons, and since he didn't ask what was in the package, he thinks that means he didn't know what it might contain?
Or when he's working he thinks nobody will notice if he skims a little money here and there; he thinks he's entitled to it because he doesn't make but minimum wage?
Or he's got a flash temper and when he gets mad he doesn't care who he hurts or how bad he gets hurt himself.
