Meanwhile, Auden looked up in surprise at Dylan. Adults, she had decided, didn't often seem very interested in what you had to say, and when they did, they were asking you very uninteresting things, like whether or not you were enjoying school.

"I'm reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman at the moment," she told him, "It's about this boy who gets brought up in a graveyard by a bunch of ghosts. I know, it sounds a bit rubbish, but actually it's quite good. I'm reading Jane Eyre, too, but it's taking me ages, because Jane does my head in, to be honest." She broke off, conscious that Dylan might not be interested in what she had to say about Jane Eyre. "D'you like reading?"
