"That's kind of cool," Auden had to admit, "I'd love to go to St. Petersburg," she had wanted to, in fact, ever since reading a story as a child of Fox's age that had been set in St. Petersburg. She fell silent - admitting she was impressed did not sit well with her.

Fox was wondering who Nikolai lived with if not his parents, but she wasn't sure whether she should ask. People, the eight-year-old had lately learnt, could get very angry at the mention of lost parents. So she merely stared at Nikolai curiously and unabashedly, imagining. Perhaps he lived in an orphanage, cold and lonely with nothing to do. Instantly, she felt sorry for him, without even knowing whether this was true.
