If Vincente and Art couldn't get their mark, they might, simply put, be decommissioned. But if the criminal would get the better of them - well, it all depends on what sort of hypothetical criminal we are speaking of. If any "minor inconvenience" (such as extensive trickery, a particularly clever rogue, or assault) were to happen, Art would be a bit rattled while Vincente would plough on with just the same amount of gusto as before. But if anything major were to happen - severe harm, potentially real threats, or the like - they might have to resort to have the coppers' protection over them. If Art were to be seriously injured and/or otherwise permanently affected, he would quit the business and plead for Vincente to do the same; if Vincente were thus afflicted, he would try his best to keep being a detective, unless it is absolutely hopeless. Then, he'd be a retired detective, returning to the antiques world and making bee-keeping jokes.
