Yes, there's great historical fiction out there. But the beauty of historical fiction is that, because none of us have been there, we can't tell if the spirit is off! For all we know, the historical fiction writers of today create worlds that are nothing like the real time periods in which their stories are set. Because they're good writers, it sounds right and rings true to our expectations, but really they're just very good fantasies. Even when the details are all exact, we can never know how right or wrong they are in capturing the spirit.
