Kendall is an alchemist from the medieval era who stumbled across rifts in the space-time continuum and has been a time traveler ever since. He's seen many eras throughout history, but until now has only observed and never engaged the people. Time travel took a toll on his mind and body, and he stopped when found himself in an alternate dimension and decided to call it home. He's in his mid-40's, at least in appearance, and he dresses in shabby mismatched clothes. He's usually shy and has poor self confidence due to a stutter and a leg crippled by a childhood illness, but he's also kind and sometimes surprisingly sarcastic.

Liadan presides over the dimension where she, Kendall, and the rest of her subjects live. She grew up in the Victorian era, where she was often considered strange for shutting herself in her library and reading controversial books rather than showing interest in parties or marriage. Her life was marred by the deaths of her father and younger sister, and when she was nineteen she found a way into another dimension and quickly left her old life behind. As the only resident of the abandoned world she became it's default leader, and took over responsibility for the library at it's heart, which contains the history of every universe. She's in her 60's and still wears Victorian dresses.

Dorian is a police officer in Philadelphia. He grew up in New Jersey, and lived with his aunt after his father killed himself after going violently insane. Dorian is very sarcastic and cynical, but more compassionate than he lets on. After running into Kendall he was pulled his and Liadan's dimension. He's been ineffectively trying to get back to his normal life ever since. He rides an old motorcycle he restored himself, and often surprises people with his intelligence.

We're all in the gutter, but some of us look at the stars.
