Subject: The greatest plot ever (about archaeology)

So, it's a long story (feel free to ask if you're curious), but I've decided to do a little short story as a side project, and it has to take place on an archaeological dig. Also, there's going to be a warlock who wears a long coat down to his ankles and a wide-brimmed hat with a feather. Possibly it will involve some kind of attempt to harness ancient magical powers, and I'm thinking of setting it in Australia, but that's up in the air.

So, any suggestions for how to make this the greatest story about sitting in dirt ever told?
