"How about we talk about your family?" I asked, holding my breath against the cigarette smoke and having doubts that this woman wouldn't burn down a barn.

Verna's smile was false and she casually blew smoke rings. "My family," she mused, but went no further. "Are you married, Dr. Tully?"

"I thought we already discussed that we are here to talk about you?"

"I like to know who I'm dealing with."

"No, I'm not married. How is your family, Ms. Verna?"
