That's easier to answer. I lean over. "I don't know how varied my interests are but I like literature. And American history. I'm doing a dissertation on Hawthorne." I raise my eyes to look at him, to check if his face is going to register the unavoidable bored expression any American takes when I mention this--presumably remembering having to ingurgitate The Scarlet Letter in school.
