"It's funny, but I saw a lot of myself as a child in Pearl." He places a long finger to his mouth, dragging it along his upper lip. "I rarely had time or desire for other children and some might say I was emotional unpredictable." His steel eyes burned with intensity as he scrutinized the nubile young woman before him. How interested in American history and literature was she? "And yet, like Pearl, very early on I could communicate efficiently with adults unlike my peers." He shrugged nonchalantly. "I guess that's what I remember most about reading The Scarlet Letter in grade school, before I was adopted."
