Well, I'm glad my writing reads well!
Those are all fair points, too :)
I wouldn't call Emily misunderstood or nerdy, really, and she's not actually bullied by her peers. The camera's actually a tool for later on in the story and was a way to get them talking here.
Nate is upset, but he doesn't really show it and I think he's past the point of being sad about it all. I just don't want to reveal everything all at once. The whole point of the coffee is to calm his nerves, haha :)
Anyway, I don't want you to think I'm totally disregarding what you're saying, because I'm not, I just wanted to defend my characters a bit. I'm very wary of falling into clichés - I actually have a bit of a checklist to make sure I don't end up with a "bad guy" or a MPDG, hehe.
