There is also the actress Michael Learned, who was given that name at her birth in 1939. According to Wikipedia, this was because her father had wanted and expected a boy and had already chosen the name Michael, and then when he had a daughter instead, he didn't bother to change it. Isn't this also the reason that Barack Obama's mother was named Stanley? At least she had the sense not to go by Stanley.

It's depressing to think that this isn't a trend. All I can say is that I'm very glad I was not given either a male name or a surname myself. And here I want to thank my Mom, whom I've always mildly criticized for using popular names that are now dated and for not showing a lot of originality, but it could have been much worse. Thanks, Mom!
