I mostly agree that most guys would not enthuse about being named Valentine, so it's a GP for me. But I think it actually would be fine IRL as long as he was called Val. Like Val Kilmer.
Valentine-rhyme-fine for a girl should be okay, and I think a lot of people would really like it. Personally to me, it's just a little too guilt-inducing to be a pleasure, because of my Valentine's Day association being "girly." I sort of feel like the name wouldn't work on a girl except for stuff like "be my valentine" ... it'd be more like Carmine on a girl, if there were no Valentine's Day.
