In Dutch and Afrikaans, Van is like the German Von and means From. It's an element in numerous surnames (Van Zyl, Van Rensburg, Van der Merwe) and widely used as a nn. Van der Merwe, nn Van, is to South African jokes what Paddy and Mick are to Irish ones.
There was a Christian rock opera once, here in SA, in which one of the main characters was an evangelist known as Van. Just saying. But I'd go the Ivan route for sure!
