I don't consider Charlie, on its own, to be a unisex name. Not at all. I consider it to be a male name, but even then, I don't like it on its own and my personal opinion is that it should always be a nickname for Charles. But if someone wanted to put in on the birth certificate of a boy, I would simply think that they don't share my view on nicknames-as-full-names and leave it at that. It's okay for a boy, though not a favorite of mine.
Charlie on its own as a name for a girl, though, I think is horrid. I realize that some Charlottes are called Charlie--in fact, I have a great-niece named Charlotte who is called Charlee--but I think it's spelled that way. Even then, though, I don't like it. Nothing about Charlie or Charlee or however you want to spell it sounds pretty or feminine. I don't like Charlotte anyway because I find it frumpy, but an additional reason that I would avoid Charlotte like the plague is the very possibility of my daughter being called Charlie.
My great-niece is the only female Charlee or Charlie that I've ever known--but come to think of it, I've never known a male Charlie, either. I can remember a guy from my high school class who was named Charles, but he went by Chuck.
I don't like it and I'm also tired of boy names being used for girls. I'm so glad that I was born at a time when this wasn't common, so I don't have to go through life with some horrid name like Charlie. I really have no idea how common or uncommon Charlie by itself is for girls. If that woman had asked me for my opinion, I would have told her what I just told you.
