Tenley was probably first popularized by Tenley Albright, the 1956 Olympic champion figure skater (who apparently went on to be an MD, I just noticed by googling the date of her championship). She was born in 1935. The name of the TV Tenley that brought it back to attention was, IMO, probably inspired by Albright. It might be a combo name or a family surname. I met someone in Texas at one point, who was named Tenley after Albright (and might have been related to her - I can't recall).
