Of course it's fine for people to choose a name that will be dated. I wouldn't compare Sophia to Gladys or Heather either but I'd compare it to Deborah and Barbara which are classics that sound really dated now. Sophia is definitely not timeless, it's a classic, but it will be linked to the 2010's in a couple of decades. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

There are also nice names near the bottom of the top 1000. Just saying. Amalia, Willa, Thalia, Liv, Cambria - to name a few.

The reason why you haven't met many Nicoles is probably because in your country it was 80-something when you were born which isn't actually that common. Where I live it was in the top 20 and it's considered very dated now.
