I have an awful association with Paula that ruins Paul for me, but I think I'd dislike it anyway just for the sound. It reminds me too much of pallbearers and "casting a pall." I think of appall and appalling, too. Paul ends up having an unpleasant vibe for me.

Mark, on the other hand, I really like. I see it as traditional and strongly masculine, with the bonus of no longer being as common as names like Matthew, William, or James. It's short, sharp, and high energy, three pluses in my book, and it has positive personal associations for me, as well. I don't know why the similarity of Paul to pall bothers me so much, while the word mark doesn't bother me at all, but there you go. When I hear or see the name Mark, I never think of the word and its meaning.

Hmm. I'm seriously thinking about Mark now.
