I would absolutely veto a name I did not want to call my son, and I would make it crystal clear that there is NO WAY I'm naming my son Desmond. So he is going to have to compromise and come up with something else that I like, or else he's going to have to reconsider my list. Both parents have veto power, and should let one another use it without arguing.
Compromise with a name you're both lukewarm about, in other words. As long as you basically like it, it'll grow on you. That's what we did. We have no regrets.
