I don't think she's 100% elegant nor 100% dowdy, somewhere inbetween. I would normally think of a Pauline as a 50-60 year old, however a little girl called Pauline would sound fresh but not in a typically fresh way. Sylvia makes me think of my grandma (who dislikes her name, but I don't mind it) - maybe it could work.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
