I always thought Ira was female because one of my favourite books series as a young teenager had a female character called Ira. Granted, it also had characters called Pinto, Bowman and Mumpo in it.

I can see why people would assume its female, because of the a at the end, and because it's similar to Isla or Iris. However, I don't think it will become a girls name like Avery did.
