Well, I'm all for naming him Bear. ;-)
But others you may like:
Scooter, Sluggo, Murphy, Roscoe, Chester, Mosi, Bubba, Mojo, George, Boomer, Percy, Bosun(= boatswain, good for a water dog), Fidget, Alfie, Fibber, Duke, Buster, Smitty, Sorrel, Jubah, Sigmund, Waldo, Knut / Canute, Marmot, Hullabaloo (nn Blue?), Ipsy, Nipsy.
My knowledge of college sports is very limited so forgive me if I've made a collegiate naming no-no.
