Yeah ... the cause of ruin, woe, illness, and death.

It's also the name of several action/fantasy characters, which is where I think its appeal came from, to those who might fancy it. And using older meanings, it could be interpreted as protection (a bane that is useful against something evil). But all I get from it is an air of evil.
