Re: August
in reply to a message by Laura
I've seen a few little boys named August. It's alright. I think it's a little bit austere-seeming, maybe because August has no holidays and no rain, and because the word 'august' (aw-GUST) sounds dry and formal. There was a character in a book I read, long forgotten ... was it Judy Blume or Beverly Cleary from my childhood? who was a stereotypical social outcast kid, and that casts a slight shadow on it for me. But it is summery and calm-sounding, too. I can imagine August being a really really popular name, even though I don't think it ever will be that popular - it seems like a good enough name to be popular. So overall, I'd give it thumbs up as someone else's baby name.I think nn Augie could be pretty stylish on some people. I can't stomach "Gus." I think that's a name for an animal. No problem though - Augie is the natural nickname and Gus is artificial.
