People might call her Gwen, yes, but that's because in the U.S., people seem to assume that they can shorten people's names all the time. A few corrections to people you know should sort that out.
As to the original question, no, I don't feel that Gwenda is too much of a mouthful. It doesn't have any conflicting sounds, and it's only TWO syllables, for Frith's sake!
