Asher - ETA Barnaby
What do you think of the name Asher, for a boy? I personally think it's a gorgeous name and love the meaning, "Happy, blessed". General opinions and thoughts please. Would it sound nice as a younger brother to Jasper? Curious as to what others think, so thanks.ETA: Also thoughts on Barnaby please. Thanks!Sarah -

Barnaby is so gimmicky and dorky, and a little pompous.I really like Asher. Unfortunately it sounds a but unfinished in my accent (ash-ah). I really like the nn Ash. I do think Jasper and Asher sound too similar though.

I love the name Asher and it grows on more and more every day. I think it would sound nice as a brother to Jasper. Barnaby I'm not so fussed on.

What ash (logical nn would be Ash, right?) means to most people is the grey combustion product dangling from the end of a cigarette. Perhaps for that reason, I've never met an Asher. I do know an English-speaking man whose parents for some reason unknown to me named him after two of the 12 Tribes: fn is perfectly acceptable (neither Joseph nor Benjamin, btw) and the mn is Aser, that being the Afrikaans version. It's pronounced with a long a. AAser. Which, round here, sounds like Arser - we aren't big on pronouncing the letter r in English. He finds it mildly amusing now, but says that at school his friends found it totally hilarious.Barnaby, on the other hand, is a name I've always greatly enjoyed. Much nicer than Barnabas, for some reason. Usually I'm not too keen on the 3-syllable-ending-in-y pattern for male names: Gregor rather than Gregory, Gerald rather than Jeremy, Anton rather than Anthony. But Barnaby sounds younger and more energetic and cheerful than Barnabas, and I would seriously consider it.

In theory Asher and Jasper look great together! However in sound they are a bit rhymey :(However Jasper and Barnaby are heaven!! They would be my perfect pairing. I adore the name Barnaby and they have the same quirky old man feel about them.

Asher is nice:) I think it goes just fine with Jasper! It's not a favorite, like Jasper, but it's your baby, and it is a nice name...so whatever you like best is what you should do...lol...
I don't like Barnaby. Not even a little bit. I don't like the Barn part of it, and then it also sounds like a silly clown dog to me. Not sure why:)

I like Asher a lot, it sounds like a more modern Ashley, and it would make a great sibset with Jasper tbh. Barnaby is, ngl, a GP fave of mine! I think it's just so sweet sounding. It grew on me after reading the Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper-- one of the main kids is named Barney, which lead me to Barnaby. I know a lot of people are hesitant about it thought because of Barney the dinosaur, who I believe is still around? He doesn't seem to be as popular as he was 20 years ago though so maybe it wouldn't be much of an issue, especially once he grew up. Asher Barnaby would make a cute combo though!

Asher is a lovely name. But with Jasper I find the endings too same-y. But Barnaby! Now there's a horse of a different color. I absolutely adore the name. It would have been on a shared top five list for my dh and me if we had ever had kids. Jasper and Barnaby together share the same roguishly handsome vibe. Keep your daughters away from those two. :0)

Haha, my Jasper is certainly going to be handsome, because he's gorgeous now! I assure you though that he is being raised to be a gentlemen! ;)

haha, that's a great way to put it re: Jasper and Barnaby. I agree with the sentiment!

Asher is cool. It's a tad rhymey with Jasper, but that would not stop me from using both if they were ones I liked enough. It doesn't clash with Jasper as a brother, at any rate.My dislike for Barnaby would fill ten pots, fifteen buckets, sixteen cans, three teacups, and four dishpans. I think it's a good name for a stuffed animal, because I think it sounds stuffy and comical and not very bright. Barnabas is actually worse.

I like Asher, but I think it may be a little too close in sound to Jasper. I've always liked Barnaby too. It's so fun.

I think it has a great meaning. I've gone back and forth on how I feel about it though. For awhile I thought it was nice. Then I started thinking it seemed too crunchy trendy. Now I'm sort of back to thinking it's nice again. I wouldn't like it as a younger brother to Jasper though, I think they sound too similar.I love Barnaby! Not sure I like the idea of it in real life, but hypothetically it's such a fun, sweet name.

I think Jasper and Asher sound nice for brothers, although they do sound a bit similar. I prefer Barnabas to Barnaby.

I really like the name Asher too. I like that it's a Biblical name but its less used, at least so far. I personally have never met an Asher. I think Asher and Jasper go well together as far as the feel of the name. They are similar in structure though (two syllable, ending in -er, with the same vowel) so that would be my only hesitation.

I quite enjoy Asher. Very dashing. Strong and rugger and quite captivating.Jasper and Asher are a bit similar for brothers, but also very nice. Sidenote: I also love Joash and don't even mind just Ash. Ashton is nice as well, if a bit popular.
