names on my mind - wdyt?
Hallie (HAL-ee) - I've liked this name ever since I saw the Lindsay Lohan version of The Parent Trap. For some reason it doesn't seem contrived to me. And it doesn't seem trendy like Hailey. It seems to belong more with something like Calla. Wdyt? Mara - something pretty about it. I love Hallie too, but on its own, it doesn't seem to be enough for me. I really like Halcyon so Hallie could work as a nn for that. Still, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to actually use Halcyon.I like Mara too. I'm on the fence with Merit.

Hallie is less trendy than Hailey, I'd agree, but certainly not as classy as Calla. I don't mind it. I like Haddie or Hattie better though - as nicknames, I should say.Mara - the meaning turns me offMaren - kinda cool. A bit out there but nice.Merit - sillyBirch - as a middle name, for sure.

Hallie - Mm I don't know how I feel about it, it's okay but something just isn't right. I like Hailey better.
Calla - I like Calla, it looks and sounds cool.
Mara - I don't like this one, it isn't that pretty.
Maren - Mm same with this one, but I like it more than Mara.
Merit - I dislike it, I prefer Meri ( it means sea in Finnish) but Merit doesn't really sound that nice.
Birch - No no, I don't like the "Bir-" at the beginning and I don't like the ending sound either.

Hallie is pretty good. I know one. It sounds more mature than Hailey I think.
Mara is pretty. It also has a mature feel without sounding "old".
Maren is okay. I know one who is kind of a hipster.
Merit sounds cute. If you can pull it off-- not sure if everyone could.
Birch is cool. I like it mostly as a middle name. I have a weakness for trees...

Hallie - I love the name. Only reason I wouldn't use it is due to bad personal associations. I think it's very pretty, and has a little bit of a homespun feel. Mara - Pretty. I'm not crazy about it, but it's nice. Maren - I like the look, but I'm not sure how to pronounce it. Merit - Seems like it should've been a Puritan name, if it wasn't. I like it as that or a version of Marit. Birch - A little too close to "bitch" for my taste. Not bad in theory, but I could see a lot of problems in practice ;)

Hallie -Way too cutesy. I can't imagine it on anyone older than five or so. Calla, on the other hand, is lovely.
Mara -I really love it if you're saying MAH-ra. I hate MAIR-ah, though.
Maren (g) --Beautiful if the first syllable has an A like apple. I'm neutral on MAH-ren and hate MAIR-en
Merit -No way. It's a random word, for starters, and it (well, Merritt) is traditionally masculine to boot. There are way better virtue names. Even if I could put that aside the sound is so abrupt. It sounds like a hiccup.
Birch -Nope. Again with the random word, and it's too close to bitch.

I agree with your sentiments about Hallie vs Hailey but I'm still not sold on it. It's pretty enough for sure but it lacks zing.Mara is very pretty. Stately but not stagnant.Maren isn't really my style but it isn't bad. The nn of Mare could be cute.Merit isn't working for me.Birch is asking for problems.

Hallie (HAL-ee) - not a fan. To me it sounds really american. Which is fine if your in America, but it doesn't sit for me as an aussie.
Maren (g) - kinda sounds cute, but in Australia it would work: http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/species/marron/pages/default.aspxMerit (g) - Award? Actually Merit is quite cute, I'd use it for a sim ;)Birch (b) - LOVE. I have a massive love of nature names for boys :D

Hallie: Love it, although I might get a different vibe from it than you do. I think it goes less with Calla and more with names like Iris, Rose, Evie, and Esther.

Mara: Very pretty. It's a warm, quiet name. Maren: I prefer Mara, but I like Maren too. Merit: Eh. I echo mirfak's Meret suggestion. It doesn't immediately bring merit badges to my mind. Birch: I picture a birch rod for corporeal punishment, so pass.

Oh corporeal punishment. Haha, ok, nevermind on Birch. I was classifying Hallie with Calla because I see it as kind of modern but not modern like Hayley or Madison. Modern like Calla or Lila. But now that I know it's a nn for Harriet I see why you associate it with Iris, Rose, and Evie. It makes me like it more. I don't associate it with Esther, though. Esther's my first name and I really don't like it.

Hallie - I like it, it's not as trendy as Haley and sounds prettier. Mara - I've always found this name to sound sophisticated and elegant. I like it.Maren - It's not a favorite but it's nice.Merit - nms, not awful thoughBirch - don't like it, sounds too similar to Burt, which is a sound I think is rather ugly and sounds funny

Hallie (HAL-ee) - I don't really like the name because it seems a bit uncompleteMara - I (obviously) like this name :DMaren (g) - I like Maren very much, because it's a very pleasant and sweet name but not too "sugary"Merit (g) - I prefer Marit, but Merit's quite nice tooBirch (b) - Dislike this name very much, the sound as well as the look of it

Hallie: I disagree that it's in the same class as Calla, but I like the name. Reminds me of the annoying Hallie Lowenthal on "My So-Called Life", though.Mara: Indeed, a very pretty name. A little somber, though.Maren: I want to like it, but it seems incomplete.Merit: Eh...not as good as Hallie or Mara.Birch: Silly. Makes me think of "Simon Birch".

I like Hallie. Although it seems a little bit like an expired fad, it was never Hayley. It makes me think of the Barbara Kingsolver novel where the sisters were named Halimeda (Hallie) and Cosima (Codi). I never saw Parent Trap.I also like Mara.Maren is a name I like when it's on paper, but in real life it sounds very harsh and stern to me. A friend used it years ago and I stopped liking it (but of course I did not tell her that)Merit - I like alright. I slightly prefer Meret http://www.behindthename.com/submit/name/meret ... I think it looks less aspirational & surnamey.Birch seems cool. The only thing is, as a name it slightly makes me think of John Birch, as in society, and that would stop me from using the name. Although I would never think of that if I met a guy named Birch.

You're saying Maren like MARE-in? I kind of like it as MARR-in, but I know this would be a huge headache.
vote up1
Yeah, rhyme Darren and Karen and Taryn and McLaren.
As MAHR-en it does seem much nicer. Not a headache, but a little distraction. Worth it, if you loved the name enough.

Hallie: Seems totally different from Calla. Calla is kind of YA fantasy to me, Hallie is limp and raggedy and sad.
Mara: Not sure how to pronounce it. If it's like Mare-a, it's pretty. If it's Marr-a, then no.
Maren: Another YA fantasy type name.
Merit: It doesn't merit my consideration.
Birch: Beer. Also the other kids having fun by making it bitch is inevitable.
vote up1
Wow, maybe I need to stop reading YA fantasy eh?! Mara is Marr-a.

Hallie makes me want to pronounce it so the first syllable has the same vowel sound as "cat", while Hayley and Hailey make me want to pronounce them so the first syllable sounds just like the word "hay." I like the latter pronunciation more, so I don't really like Hallie.I have a niece named Mara. I think it's pretty and delicate.Maren is really pretty. Makes me understand why Karen was so popular years ago.Merit and Birch I find mighty ugly.
