Re: Spelling questions

Claire or Clare? Clare. I don't see the point of using a French spelling and an English pronunciation - same with Isabel versus Isabelle.
Rebecca or Rebekah? Rebecca. Rebekah is too close to her biblical roots.
Sarah or Sara? Sarah was my grandmother and was very nearly me. Anyway, Sara sounds different - SAHra instead of SAIRa.
Rachel or Rachael? In spite of the biblical roots, I prefer Rachael. Rachel looks incomplete, and anyway where I live people would probably guess RAHkh el
Katherine or Kathryn? I really dislike the dumbed-down fake glitter of Kathryn. Katherine, then, but I'd prefer Katharine. (We didn't use it, in part because DH and I couldn't agree on a spelling. He's a C man.)
Laurie or Lori? Laurie for sure. Lori looks like a rare forest animal.
Joanie or Joni? (I've known a Joni and a Joanie) Joni is at least as dumbed-down as Kathryn, so Joanie. But why not Joan?
Janine or Jeannine? Assuming they sound pretty much the same, Janine is more clean-cut and stripped-down.
come to think of it....
Jean or Jeanne? Definitely Jean; same as Clare. Though my Jean SIL got a letter from Madagascar addressed to Monsieur Jean LN! And Jean is often used for boys in South Africa too, as a variation on Jan, Johan etc and a nod to French Huguenot ancestry, real of hoped-for.
Aubrey or Aubrie? Shee-it. I've never met a girl one, and male ones are by no means rare here; in fact I knew a guy whose name I forget (maybe Albert?) but his school nn was Aubrey. Aubrie is straight out of a recipe book - soupe aux tomates et au Brie?
Here's one for you: Stephen or Steven?
