100 Year Comparison
I did a side by side comparison of the Top 30 most popular female names in 2013 and 1913. I think it is interesting to see how some of the names are still there (i.e. Elizabeth and Grace) and how some names have replaced others. Who would've thought that Sophia/Sofia would be the new Mary? The same for Harper and Lillian. Just something fun to look at :)1913 / 2013
Mary / Sophia
Helen / Emma
Dorothy / Olivia
Margaret / Isabella
Ruth /Ava
Mildred Mia
Anna / Emily
Elizabeth/ Abigail
Frances / Madison
Marie / Elizabeth
Alice / Charlotte
Evelyn / Avery
Florence / Sofia
Rose / Chloe
Virginia/ Ella
Lillian / Harper
Louise / Amelia
Edna / Aubrey
Gladys / Addison
Ethel / Evelyn
Irene / Natalie
Catherine / Grace
Ruby / Hannah
Josephine / Zoey
Grace / Victoria
Thelma / Lillian
Hazel / Lily
Martha / Brooklyn
Edith / Samantha
Annie / Layla♥ Rate my list ♥

These are the names I'd like to see off the 2013 list: Isabella, Mia, Abigail, Madison, Charlotte, Avery, Harper, Aubrey, Addison, Hannah, and Brooklyn. I would replace them with these from the 1913 list: Rose, Lillian, Irene, Catherine, Hazel, Martha, Anna, Ruby, Marie, Helen, and Frances. Not all of the replacements are huge favorites of mine, just better, in my opinion, than what they're replacing. Just as not every name I'm leaving on the 2013 list is a huge favorite, some of them I think are just okay and some just not nearly as bad as what I'm removing. So the best combined list would be:Sophia
Emma
Olivia
Rose
Ava
Lillian
Emily
Irene
Catherine
Elizabeth
Hazel
Martha
Sofia
Chloe
Ella
Anna
Amelia
Ruby
Marie
Evelyn
Natalie
Grace
Helen
Zoey
Victoria
Lillian
Lily
Frances
Samantha
Layla

It's not really surprising that I prefer the 2013 names overall, but some of the 1913 names are real gems: Helen, Mary, Anna, Frances, Rose, Josephine, Gladys, Irene, Catherine, Grace, and Edith. Gladys is my least favorite of the good names but I still kinda like it.

Man, is it wrong that I like the 1913 list 100% more than the 2013 one? Which isn't to say I dislike all the names on the 2013 list; far from it, I think many of them (Samantha, Sofia, Natalie, Hannah, Olivia, etc.) are very beautiful. However, it's so refreshing to see names like Gladys, Florence, Thelma, Irene, etc. so high up on the list! I would love to see some of these names used nowadays!

Some of these make excellent combinations! Dorothy Olivia, Margaret Isabella, Ruth Ava, Ethel Evelyn, Irene Natalie, Ruby Hannah, Thelma Lillian, and Edith Samantha are lovely.
