I've seen it work in practice a couple of times - Vivi Charles, Margaret George. Both circumstances were family surnames, and in order for it to "work" I think the names have to be very traditional male classics that have a softer sound. Charles instead of Frederick, George instead of Robert. The female name should be undeniably feminine, so I think it was smart that they used Vivi/Vivienne instead of Vivian, which could skew male.
