Rose and its varieties
I've been thinking about the name Rose today and I really like it for a few namesakes I know. I like the name too, but it just seems a bit plain to me and while it's not very popular anymore, it used to be quite popular. So I'm wondering - what is your opinion of Rose? And do you have a favorite Rose variant?

I have been having this very same debate for a while now. Rose is a family name (DH's side- great grandma's first name, aunt's middle name, and on my side my much loved step mother's middle), and it is rising to the top of my list if we were to have another daughter. But, I am big on naming 'options' so I really prefer having a formal name with good nickname potential. Plus, I really, really love Rosemary and Rosalie. So, on the one hand, I love the quiet beauty of simply Rose, and worry that using a more elaborate form might detract from that, as well as the honouring part, but on the other hand, I fear that using just Rose is squandering my naming possibilities. Sorry, that was more ramble than assistance, but I do commiserate with the dilemma.

My favourite Rose variant is Rose =) I love the simplicity and beauty of it. There are others I don't mind but I always come back to just Rose.

Rose alone seems trite and unimaginative. Rose as a nn for names like Rosemary and Rosamond, both of which I like enough to use, would be fine.I dislike Rosa, Rosetta, Rosella, Rosina and Rosalie. I suppose there's nothing wrong with Rosalind, but the only one I've ever known has spoilt it for me.ETA: Rosabel is very nice! I always forget it, so perhaps it should count as a GP rather than a possibility.

I saw Rosabel in a search on this site and it caught my attention. Very pretty name!

I love Rose. It's beautiful, timeless, simple, and I like the nature connection.I also love Rosemary, Rosalie, and Rosalind.

I don't find it plain at all. I think Rose is such a beautiful, classic and feminine name. I also like Rosemary and Rosalie, but I would still prefer Rose.

I love Rose so much. It would be at the top of my list if my mother and son weren't allergic to roses. There's too big a risk that any Rose of mine could be allergic to the flower that shares her name. Simple, unadorned Rose is my favorite form of the name. I don't find it plain at all--more lush and lovely. My favorite variant is Rosanna.

I don't know just how popular it really was; the only Rose I know is about fifty, though of course it's very popular as a middle name.
I like Rose best, but Rosa is great too, in a somewhat showier but not frilly way.

As someone whose name is Rose, and only that, I can say it's certainly more interesting if my parents would've given me a variant of it which can be shortened to Rose. It would be much more classy. I also lack a middle name, which makes it even shorter. My favourite variants are probably Roselyn/Roselynn and Rosemarie.

I thought there was at least one Rose on these boards, so thanks for chiming in :-)

No problem! It was really funny, since I'm currently planning on (unofficially) extending my name to one of those options; so when I came across this question it was a very funny coincidence that I just had to reply to! (:

I really really dislike Rose.
I went to school with a girl named Roslyn. She pronounced is RAUZ-lyn (ros rhymes with cause or gauze). I like that one, probably because it doesn't sound like rose.

I love Rose. I've said once before that I like it a lot despite its reputation as a "filler" name. I think it's lovely and simple while still being charming. My favorite Rose variant would have to be Rosalind.

I too find just 'Rose' a tad boring. Rosemary and Rosetta are my favorite long forms. I also find Rosa pretty and unexpected.
