Dardanelles
in reply to a message by Viatrix
While I haven't seen Dardanelles before, I do know that in the early 1920s some Americans named their daughters Dardanella and a couple of variations. Apparently there was some sort of conflict going on in the Dardanelles at that point. I can't explain why a modern couple would name their son Dardanelles, but I suppose it could be a family name or a favorite vacation spot.

It was a disastrous campaign in the First World War, in which an attempt to approach the Turkish coast from the sea and land an invasion force largely made up of Australian soldiers went horribly wrong. The name could commemorate a family tragedy or a national disaster, but hardly a happy holiday.
