Hypothetical honoring question
My dad's middle name is Allan. If I had a daughter and wanted to giver her a middle name like her grandfather's, which option would be best? Are there any I didn't think of? Don't worry if something you come up with is a stretch; I'm not having kids anytime soon. Just wondering about this as a middle name option. Alana (simplest)
Allana (closest to Allan, but sort of a weird spelling)
Alanna (I mainly like this one because of the Tamora Pierce character)
Alaina
Alanis, Alannis
Alyn, Alynn, etc. (I don't really like these ones)
Allena, Alena
Ailina (Irish version of Alan with an a on the end)
Alwen, Alwyn (not actually forms of Alan, just sound kind of similar)

For a middle name, I'd probably go with Allana. The spelling's not that odd and it's easily explained. There's also Alla - okay, might sound a bit like Allah, but again, middle name. Or Allanya?

I'd just go with Alana or Alanna. They both clearly reference 'Allan' so I don't think you have to use the more contrived Allana spelling. Though it's a middle name so I think it will also be no trouble if that is the one you feel is the best fit.As a stretch, I think Alice could be used to honor Allan. Just because of the same first syllable thing and they do sound very similar.

I, um, really like Allyn. A lot. *blush* I first spotted it in a novel a long time ago, and I thought it was pretty and feminine. I can be slow sometimes, I guess, because I admired it for years before it finally dawned on me that it was just Allen run through the Y=feminine spin cycle (something I usually dislike). I still like Allyn, and if I had a reason to use it like you do, I'd go for it. But since the Y spellings aren't working for you...I think the simplest way is usually better, so Alana is my pick of the rest. Alanna might be quite a good choice for you if it would reference both your dad and a character you care about.

I love Alanna from the Lioness books too!! I would totally use this name :DI guess as an honouring middle name what form of Allan you chose would have to flow with the first name too. But of the ones you wrote I like Alanna and Alaina the most. I know a girl called Alaina. There's also Aleena / Alina
Aylen
Aylin
Aline
Aileen
Ailen Some of them kind of stretching the Allan sound a bit!

My favorites:
Allana - like Alanna in sound, but with his spelling - this would get my first pick apart from just using Allan/Allyn (see below) - and I don't think the spelling's weird, btw, I think it looks lovely :)Alanna (because Tamora Pierce and her characters are awesome, agreed)and three others to think about:Ally - short and sweet
Allyn - know you don't love the 'y' ones, but this is close to his but a little more "girly" looking, i guess
Allan - since it's a family honoring name, you could just treat it like a surname. Allan has a nice sound for a girl or boy (like Ryan, which I've seen used for girls), so if you like it by itself in original form, I say go for it! The others, while nice, are less obviously attached to his mn or quite a bit different, so I personally probably wouldn't use them. (Allena would be nice, but since he doesn't spell it Allen, and I'm particular about things like that, it would annoy me - haha)
