HelpBirth Announcement (and one more on the way)
My step-cousin Airielle (yes, that's how her name is spelled) and her fiance Alex just had their baby girl. They named her Amira Odette.
And my neighbor's daughter, with whom I was childhood friends, is expecting a boy. She and her fiance picked out the name Ishmael (don't know the middle name).
WDYT? Personally, I love "Amira Odette," and while I wouldn't use Ishmael I'm not opposed to it.

Amira is okay, but Odette and Ishmael are awesome.

AMira is kind of pretty, though around here "a mirror" is usually rendered in a way that makes it very similar to Amira. Odette is ugly but at least it's only the middle name.
Ishmael is awful, so awful that I'm wondering if these people are just using Ishmael as the baby's "call name" till he's born, either to keep the real name they've chosen a secret or because they haven't decided on one yet. It reminds me of some people I know who called their baby Ishkabibble before it was born because they hadn't picked a name, and when they did they wanted it to be a surprise. (They named the kid Elora, I think. Or Eloria or something like that.)

When I was in Year 8 we read a book called Don't Call Me Ishmael, about a boy whose parents are Moby Dick scholars or something. I can see a real life Ishmael getting lots of jokes about his name, like the character in the book.

Yeah, all I could think was that kid's gonna be able to say "Call me [firstname] Ishmael... no, really!"
Then again, I'm not sure how many jokes he would get. They aren't making kids read the classics as much in school anymore... until he hits college, he's probably safe nowadays ;-)

I'm not so fond of Amira Odette. Amira sounds made up to me. And Odette is very old fashioned, not in a good, classic way, but in an old woman way.
I actually like Ishmael, though I prefer Ismael.
