Viola, March, and India
A question for each name. 1. Which of these Viola (vie-O-lə) combos do you prefer? Once you've chosen a favourite, feel free to throw in a few of your own ideas or mix and match. Names in pink (because why not?) are those with some form of sentimental value. Viola Alexandrine Maude
Viola Bronwen Lark
Viola Édith Liliane
Viola Eulalie Bronwen
Viola Hedwig Alice
Viola Nell Françoise
Viola Rosalind Édith
Viola Rosalind Maude
Viola Rosamund Alice
Viola Tempest Miriam2. March is the birth month of the two most important people in my life. What do you think of it as a potential second middle name? I'm pondering Ezra Gideon March. 3. I've said for a long time that I'm against "big" place names as given names, but I've always had a big soft-spot for India. What do you think of the name? Is it a humongous no-no?

1. Viola Eulalie Bronwen
2. Great 2nd middle name, and super handsome pairing.
3. I'd give it a no. Feels like there's a lot of cultural baggage.

Thank you! :)

1. I don't care for Viola (it means "rape" in Spanish, albeit with a slightly different pronunciation, and reminds me of the instrument. And speaking of pronunciation, that's another reason I don't like it -- so much potential for confusion), but Viola Bronwen Lark is a really beautiful combo. If I could mix and match I'd make Viola Miriam Alice or Viola Alexandrine Lark.2. I like it, for some reason (though I prefer it as a surname).3. Bad. Really bad. Especially as you're from England, which has an ugly history with India. White people using it as a name has unfortunate imperialistic undertones in my opinion. (Edit: Just realized this sounds like I think everyone in England is white...yikes. Excuse the poor wording!)

Isn't that "violar"? Thanks you, anyway! :)

Yes, "violar" is the infinitive (to rape), but if you wanted to say that he/she rapes something you'd say "él/ella viola _______". It's the third-person present conjugation.

Well.I guess that's goodbye to Viola... :(

Viola Rosamund AliceMarch would be a super cool middle name, especially if it's significant. Ezra Gideon March is aces. I like India, but it feels a bit misplaced if you've never been there/don't have a reason for using it- more than most other obvious place names. Maybe because as an entity it's so large? Using it as a name feels a bit like taking possession over it and appropriating it at will. This is less big an issue with something like, London, or Booklyn (et al), because they are relatively "small" places in a grander scheme

Thank you! I guess India is remaining GP.

1) Viola Édith Liliane
Viola Rosalind Édith2) If I were going to honor, I would use their actual names rather than their birth month. I think it sounds fine though, esp. in that combo.3)India is a big GP for me as well! It's just so beautiful to say...and write...but I don't see any way I could justify using it :(

Believe me, I've thought a great deal about using actual names before, but I feel like March would be appreciated just as well, if not more :)

Viola Alexandrine Maude - Alexandrine is clunky in here
Viola Bronwen Lark - Cute. I like it.
Viola Édith Liliane - The flow is off for me
Viola Eulalie Bronwe - Eulalie gets echo-y with Viola
Viola Hedwig Alice - diverse. Interesting
Viola Nell Françoise - Nice
Viola Rosalind Édith - these next three are a bit heavy
Viola Rosalind Maude
Viola Rosamund Alice
Viola Tempest Miriam - awesomeMy favourites are Viola Tempest Miriam and Viola Bronwen Lark.Ezra Gideon March is amazing! I have no problems with India as a first name. If you're not sure, though, I wouldn't do it. MAybe Indigo?

Thank you! Indigo just isn't for me, I'm afraid, at least not for a girl.

1. Viola Bronwen Lark. I like Viola and Bronwen. I'm not normally a fan of names like Lark but in a second mn spot it's fine. I like Viola Nell Francoise too. Viola Bronwen Nell would be good.2. March is fine as a second middle name. It's a surname as well as a month so doesn't seem odd to me to use it in that spot. Although I wouldn't use Ezra or Gideon the combo flows well.3. I love the name India and if I had a daughter right now, it's what I'd use. Place names don't bother me. People on BTN often bring up the colonial connotations but I don't see it myself. I don't think of the country India in that way (I might have done if it was still 1897 or even 1945) but India has been independent for 60 years. Maybe that's just me though.

Do you not think Bronwen Nell runs together a little too much? Interesting thoughts on India, you're swaying me, though it wasn't going to take much :P

Normally, I don't like combos where the last letter is the same as the next one but Bronwen Nell doesn't bother me so I think it could work.

I love Viola, it's one of my favourites.
I like Viola Édith Liliane, Viola Bronwen Lark and Viola Rosalind Alice the best. What about: Viola Beatrix Opal, Viola Elise Dora, Viola Édith Alice, Viola Liliane Freya?I quite like March as a second middle name. I think Gideon Ezra March works well, although I don't like either Gideon or Ezra. March makes me think most of Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March from Little Women, which is a nice association. I really like India, and I'm against most place names too! India just has such a nice sound to it. I think it's really sweet.

Ooh, I like Viola Beatrix Opal and Viola Liliane Freya! Thank you :)

Which way are you pronouncing Viola? My favourite is Viola Rosamund Alice, because I love Rosamund. Viola Rosalind Edith, Viola Alexandrine Maude and Viola Rosalind Maude are also nice. I think March is fine as a middle name.India is too tied to the country for me to like it as a name for a person, plus there's the whole colonialism aspect...

vie-O-lə, sorry. And that's exactly what holds me back with India, and a lot of other place names. Hrmph.
