OPs on Nathan/Nathaniel
My husband loves Nathaniel, but I despise the nn Nate (just known too many), and my nephew is TanTan, so we can't use Than or Tan. Neil defeats the purpose. Would Nathan be a nice balance? Any other variations, or is Nathaniel the very best?

I love Nathan and actually prefer it to Nathaniel.

My son is Nathan so obviously I love that name. He gets called Nath (nayth) and sometimes Nate (which I don't really like)..

I don't mind Nath.
I do really like Nathan.

I really like Nathan, but he might end being called Nate too.

Nathan probably defaults to Nate much more often than Nathaniel defaults to Nate. So that won't solve the problem.Neil defeats the purpose of Nathaniel? I don't get that, but okay. How about Jonathan?

Nathaniel way better then Nathan, which is pronounced differently and is very unattractive imo. One of my cousins is a Nathaniel and everyone calls him Nat. If you want to avoid the nn Nate, stay away from Nathan, as it's the most common nn.

Niel (sounds like Neil) is often used as a nn for both Nathaniel and Daniel where I live. So I'm pretty used to it. Why do you see it as defeating the purpose? Is your purpose to use Nathaniel without a nn? Because that isn't very likely! If you don't use a nn, others will.

Ah, where I am Neil is a full name. I dislike using full names as nicknames, because I feel like I should have just named my child that. NO, Nathaniel is too long without a nickname (and my husband requires nns)... which I why I vetoed it. I prefer Nathan, and would likely push for no nickname that related to the name.

I know a Nathaniel nn Nathan. Go ahead and use it.

I think it could work. However, people might assume his given name is Nathan, and start calling him Nate anyway.
What about Nat or Thane (a little different than Tan/Than)

Well, there's always the possibility that Nathan would be called Nate too. If you really can't stomach the idea of your son one day choosing to go by Nate, Nathan and Nathaniel are bad choices.I really like Nathan but I LOVE Nathaniel. It's my very favorite boys' name.
