Niel (sounds like Neil) is often used as a nn for both Nathaniel and Daniel where I live. So I'm pretty used to it. Why do you see it as defeating the purpose? Is your purpose to use Nathaniel without a nn? Because that isn't very likely! If you don't use a nn, others will.

Ah, where I am Neil is a full name. I dislike using full names as nicknames, because I feel like I should have just named my child that. NO, Nathaniel is too long without a nickname (and my husband requires nns)... which I why I vetoed it. I prefer Nathan, and would likely push for no nickname that related to the name.
