Sister Names for Ramona
Hello! This is my first post to the message boards. I've been a little nervous about traversing this internet plain, because the lay-out isn't one I'm familiar with and I have had some really bad experiences with baby name message boards in the past. I love this site though and the polls are wonderful. They're so helpful and it's not completely uncommon to find polls involving names that I don't hear day-in and day-out. It's hard for me to describe what a godsend that is to me and still be brief about it.I wanted to ask for some help because of the polls. I've been seeing the name Ramona drifting around a bit there. Personally, I think of Ramona from Scott Pilgrim vs the World. It's a good movie and that quirky character is actually why I like the name.I recently realized that a union between two of my characters (for my books series) would result in a lot of kids. They'd mostly have girls, and I've decided that their first daughter should be named Ramona. It's perfect. The main character is a rebellious, strong-willed lounge singer and the guy is more like a mercenary, with a sense of humor and a strong sense of family. Ramona fits as a name for these two because it sounds strong but it's also a little quirky. It's not exactly normal, but it's not so out there that one would wonder where they got it. It's not like Elizabeth or Marilyn. It's different. The reason I need help is because I got this name from watching other people's activity. It's never occurred to me to use it before. Instead, you lovely people brought it to my attention and I'm hoping you can help me out finding some sister names. What names do you think work on that Strong but Quirky level. Ramona could even be more like Serious but Graceful or a Youthful, Old Soul kind of feel. Personally, I'm leaning towards the name Mavis, but I would really like more opinions and options. I'd also like it if you could try to stay away from names that end with an "E" sound at the end. They don't flow well with the rest of the name. If you're coming up empty and all you can think of is boy names, I don't mind a few brother names as well. She might have a brother or two. I'm not certain yet.

Hello! You're the first person to suggest boy names as well. Thank you very much!I do not know how I missed the name Sabina. Sabine is one of my all time favorite names. I'm definitely adding that name to the list, along with Silvia and Tamara. Awesome picks!I like the names you put out there for a boy. If they had a son, it'd likely only be one. It would be a real stretch to give them two. I have to be really careful about which name I choose. I can tell you that Anton, Darius, Rafael and Victor will be going on my names to consider. Thank you very much for those. Gabriel would be on that list too, but I have that on a different list entirely. :D

Thank you so much for the name suggestions! They're lovely! I have Matilda on the list and I'm using Leona as a middle name for another character. I'm definitely adding Maya and Cecilia to the list.I will definitely post when I've officially decide on the number of siblings and the names. It won't be tonight, but I'll post it as "Ramona's Sisters". I might be able to come to settle on a number by this weekend. It's just hard to say because the two characters are essentially immortal and they would have a lot of difficulty actually avoiding having children because of nature of their magical beings. Eventually they'd figure out how to taper off the number, but it would seriously take a lot of mind and body power. I'm still plotting out their married life. :) Essentially what I'm trying to say is that the number of children that they would have would be a ridiculous number and it's hard for me to completely wrap my head around, but it's part of the conflict in their relationship that initially made this couple of interest to me in the first place.

Ramona is a lovely name. I must be a bit older than you, because I always think of Ramona Quimby, the fictional character. I was thrilled when Maggie Gyllenhall used it for her daughter. Mavis is great and I could see a Mavis and Ramona, but imagine that something like Avis and Ramona might be even quirkier. Anyway, some quirky but legit names coming right up!:
Elmira or Elvira
Francine
Paulette
Beatrix
Margot
Roxanne
June
Geraldine
Tamsin
Winona
Tallulah
Daphne (though this ends in e sound, try Delphine)
Carmen
Mathilda
Lavender
Maven
Astrid
Wren
Blaire
Amelia
Simone
Maxine
Stella
Welcome, and hope that helps!

Thank you for the names, the information about the rating systems, and the warm welcome.I have a big series going, so I use a lot of names. Even still, I got most of them before I started being active on this website. I love that some of the names that I'm using are popping up in this thread. I'm actually using Delphine. Its a fantastic, almost whimsy name for being a bit older. I love it.I'm putting Amelia and Roxanne on my short list for sure. I think Blaire might find it's way on there as well. I really like it. Avis is pretty cool too if I decide not to use Mavis.Elvira is actually a guilty pleasure name for me. I'm tempted to put it on the list, but I have plans for it.Great list! Thank you! It helps a lot!

Thank you so much for your list!I love the way you set it up. Saying Ramona with the names really helped. I have Carmen and Matilda on my options list. I also put on Lorena, Carlotta, and Bridget. While I adore the name Heidi (which is actually kind of out of character for my usual preferences), the E sound doesn't work well with the rest of the name that would be involved.Great list! Thank you again!

Mavis is a lovely name. I hope it picks up in popularity, because I would love to see a little Mavis running around. That would be the sweetest! You have a lot of really great names on this list. Thank you. I put quite a few on my sisters'-names-list. I mean, I won't use all the names on my list (it's a long list), but I love having options. It's good to have options in this case too because of the circumstances of this family. They're going to have a very big family. I put Thora, Avril, Minerva, Matilda, Lorelei, and Francine on there for sure. You also had some on there that I'm already using. I love it when that happens. It makes me feel like I'm on the right track naming wise, and it also makes suggestion run smoother. I have a Florence, a Violet, and an Evelyn. None of them are part of this family, but I love those names.Thank you so much for your help!

Beatrix comes to mind because of the sisters in the Beverly Cleary books.Have you seen the ratings feature? http://www.behindthename.com/rating/
or there's a link to ratings on a name's page... sometimes, you can find "similar feeling" names by using the link to "names with similar ratings" on a name's rating page.
http://www.behindthename.com/rating/similar.php?name=ramonaTo me, of those, the most similar feeling names are Raquel, Astrid, Marcella, and maybe Zelda, Margot, or Vivian.
Some more from my own favorites list: Carmen, Deirdre, Darcy, Deanna, Gillian, Tanith

I was not aware that there was a rating's feature. How exactly are names rated on here? I can't say that I've ever even noticed that. I get really swept up in the origins, the spelling variations, the meanings to the names, and the polls that I think I've just completely overlooked that feature.
Do ratings have anything to do with how the name is perceived based on characteristics?
I will look into this further. Thank you for sharing that.In regards to the names you shared though, I love Raquel. I knew a Raquel once. She was a jazzy lady. I definitely added Raquel to the list, along with Astrid, Margot, Carmen, and Gillian.I love the name Vivian, but I have a rule about not using names that I am considering using for a baby (if I have one). Vivian's on my short list technically,... as Vivienne. ... Great pick. I'm really in love with it.

That is exactly what the ratings feature is for. You can rate names on a scale. The results are shown for any name (as long as there is a ratings link on the right hand side), and it will list how many people have rated it at the bottom. BtN then matches other names that rate similar. When you open the link for ratings, there is another link for similarly rated names and it will tell you names that are 9% in variance, 12%, etc. Example:
the name Heidi was rated by 244 people. The results of that are similar to the names Holly and Bonnie (9% variance).

I love these! Thank you so much! You were a ton of help! Regina, Maxine, Veronica, Fern, and Gwendolen definitely made it on my list of names to choose from. This was a fantastic list. I feel like you really got the feel I was looking for. :DEdit: Oh! I forgot to mention how much I loved that you put the name Celeste at the very top of the list. That's actually the mom's name. It kind of reaffirms that Celeste and Ramona go nicely together as well. Thank you for that. I know it wasn't intentional, but I still really appreciate it.
