Tacky.
in reply to a message by Joiya
I'm a musician, my husbands a musician, ALL my friends are musicians and not one of us would touch those names with a 10 foot pole. The only exception for me would possibly be Aria/Arya for a boy, we met a Balinese man with that name and apparently its well used there for men.Everyone I know that has used those names for kids like Cadence etc. doesn't know what a Cadence is! I hated working out Cadences as a kid so its an extremely stupid name.

I used to have the BRATTTIEST cat name Sonnet when I was little. We inherited it from a neighbor who went to live in a nursing home. That cat was so bratty. She would scratch us anytime we came into the dining room because she'd hide in chairs and as you'd walk past, she'd cut you. Can't support. HATE Sonnet.

I don't know if you meant for this to sound rude, but it came across as a little aggressive. You can't just assume that because you don't like names, other people with similar interests wouldn't like them too. Not everyone thinks like you or your loved ones. I'm glad you've found people in your life that share your opinions, but that doesn't mean you have to bash the opinions of those that differ from yours. That being said, I can see where you're coming from. While I don't completely agree, I get it. :DI do think its very interesting that you would give a boy the name Aria and the reason you gave was pretty awesome. I certainly wasn't aware that it was a name used for Balinese men. Very cool.

In a related note,
My husband is a musician (artist, really) and doesn't like Cadence either. But, he does like Harmony a lot, and loves both Zimri and Jubal for their historical references. We also considered Jubilee, Viola, Sonnet and Minuet seriously, though I am far more interested in Minuet than he is. I only have musical bones (play violin/viola and sing opera/aria), but would not call myself a musician and I cannot create on my own. That said, I would not use Aria because of it's trendiness... but I love the history Bex mentioned behind it.

I love the name Jubilee. I just like how it sounds. It's so happy and free. The first time I saw the name, it was associated with a grocery store. I had no idea it had a musical reference involved. It's very cute, and potentially very pretty with the right surname and personality.
I really like Sonnet too. I think that's my English degree coming out though. Sonnet's are a great read and I love literary names, including names that allude to the written word as opposed to characters and authors.I'm sure you and your husband will pick the perfect name(s). It sounds like you have a lot of choices. That's always a good thing. That way you can narrow it down and both be happy.

I didn't mean to come across as aggressive or rude.. but its just one of my real pet hates.. every time I meet someone and I say i'm a musician and somones like oh I love music so much I named my daughter "Melodee" (true story) or some other musical term, it drives me nuts because they don't know what these terms mean (for the most part). I guess it would be the same as people using historical names without knowing the stories/characters etc. and i'm sure it would piss historians off.

That makes sense. I'm sorry I essentially called you out on it. I think I get a little defensive on behalf of others because I like some really unusual names. I've gotten a lot of slack for over the years, even though I've done my best to be open-minded about other people's choices. Sorry about being a little bit of a jerk. Everyone has their own opinions and you have every right to express yours. I have naming pet peeves too, so I should be far more understanding :)
There are some gorgeous music related names out there. I think it just depends on the person for preference,... and the same can be said for any other associated name list-ideal. :D I don't know enough about History to say anything about names to avoid, beyond ones like Adolf, Caligula, Brutus, etc.
I must say that I personally cringe when I hear about people naming their babies Renesme after that Twilight baby and it took me a long time to come to terms with the name Astrid. I've read "Blood and Chocolate" by Annette Curtis Klause cover-to-cover at least five times, maybe more. I also pick it up and read my favorite scenes. Astrid is an awful person in those books. It completely spoiled the name for me. Similarly, I still hate the names Estelle, Estella, and Stella because of Dickens' "Great Expectations".
O.O Now that I've ranted ... oops ... I'm just saying that I get it.

I love Estella for the same reason you dislike it. Great Expectations is one of my favourite books and I love Estella despite her personality throughout most of the book.

I can't stand her. She upset me so much when I was reading that book.
:D That was kind of the point was making though. It's all about perception of the name. You love the name Estella and I hate it, both of our opinions are based on the same book. Everyone likes or dislikes names, it's all subjective. I can't say Great Expectations is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed it. I want to read it again but it's not exactly a favorite for me. What makes it one of your favorites? What makes you love the name Estella despite the character's personality? I would really love to know. ^.^

I have an ex-friend from junior high who fancied herself a musician and she grew up to name her kids Kaydance and Melodee. Because that's what a REAL music-lover would do.
