Abner
Here is one I don't recall ever seeing discussed here. I do love it. I'm probably in the minority, but it's so rugged and masculine to me. Swoon. And there's the possibility of Abe (senza "-ham").I don't even think I could relegate it to the middle name spot. It has to be prominently featured.

All I see is vintage comics. The little town of Dogpatch, with Li'l Abner, his lovely wife Daisy Mae, and wasn't General (?) Jubilation P Cornpone in there somewhere? He was certainly rugged and masculine ...

I'm sorry but all I can think about is the comic Li'l Abner, so it sounds like a hillbilly name to me. I must admit that it would be refreshing to hear.

That's just the sort of name I like.

I just can't like it. Abraham nn Abe is so much better.

I actually don't mind it at all. It's such an "old man" name and that makes me like it all the more!

Abner is so dapper! I love it with the nickname Abbey.

Love it. So handsome, rugged and old world.. so nice. I love it.

One of my grandfather's brothers was named Abner, he was known as "Uncle Ab". It is sort of dashing. I'd be please to meet a little Abner, though I do prefer Abraham to get Abe. But Abner is a little more unexpected, and very distinguished.

Cool! I've never seen Abner discussed here either. It don't particularly love it, but I'd still be tickled to see it used. :) Other possible Abes:
Abednego :)
Abel - I like this one
Abijah
Abram
Gabriel
Jabez
Joab - another one I like
Moab

AbijahI have an ancestor named Abijah Gould. He was black, and I think grandson of a slave. I have never seen that name mentioned before either :)

It's okay.
I personally prefer Adner instead. Ad-ner. To my knowledge, Abner is Ab-ner (took a look at page myself)
I know I have Adner before and know its not a name that I made up but for reason, I can't seem to find it in the database );I used it for a major character in a series that I'm currently working on so the name has some significant meaning to me. Also, I just like the way it sounds. Vintage quality, very rare. Not some modern\made up tacky type of nameAbner is fine. I much prefer Adner

I like it too. It has a comforting sort of cadence. What would you pair it with?

Well, one cannot help but remember Constable Abner Jeffries from Road to Avonlea. With me, anything Avonlea-related is automatically passable if not endorsed. In this case, it is an enthusiastic endorsement.I think Abner Micaiah is lovely. (my-KAY-uh)

Three cheers for the Avonlea reference.Pretty sure that's the only reason I like Alec, Felix, and Jasper - and find Hettie a wonderfully protectable ugly little duckling.

Is there a cartoon/show/movie about a pig named Abner? Because unforunately that is the only thing I can think of when I hear this name :|

There was a comic strip called Lil' Abner. I think from like, the 40's.

Lil Abner is what I immediately thought of and all I can think of when I hear the name Abner. I'm sure it's because I'm older, but I must say that Lil Abner lasted quite a bit longer than the 1940s. It ran from 1934 to 1977.

I have no idea about cartoons or television shows, so it couldn't have any bearing on my admiration. I also have respect for pigs, and do not eat pork (if I can help it) due to the cruel way they are farmed. I know of one pig named Wilbur from Charlotte's Web, another name I admire.

It's actually from Hey Arnold, which I didn't remember until I looked up. I just can't get past the pig assiocation. I don't really eat pork either but it just sounds like an old guy who wears mud stained overralls living out in the sticks to me. Same thing with Wilbur.

Honestly, the image of an old man in overalls is far more appealing and respectable to me than a young boy who exists in a cluttered cloud of garish plastic toys and can't have conversations due to his dependency on his mobile phone for all life interaction. I do not see how the younger person image is "better". Old people have been far more kind to me my entire life, so it is hardly any wonder names like Abner give me a positive feeling.

Huh, a very interesting point.

I never said old was bad. I like a lot of 'older' sounding names as well. It's just the mental image of Abner that does not appeal to me. No need to get so defensive. It's called opinions for a reason.
