Newest grandson
My daughter had a baby boy a few months ago. She and her SO named him:Alphonse Nathaniel. He joins his big brother Raphael Jordan. We'd like honest opinions on his name (we all have thick skins so be honest), and what do you think of Raphael and Alphonse as siblings?

Raphael Jordan is gorgeous, I really like it. Nathaniel is great too, but personally I am not a big fan of Alphonse. Does Alphonse have a nn by any chance?

Alphonse sometimes gets called Al and rarely Alphie, but mostly just Alphonse. Alphie is a nickname he'll out grow by school age, but is kind of cute on an 8 month old.
I'm glad you like Raphael.

I was wondering whether he might get "Phonse", kind of like "The Fonz" from Happy Days!

I like Raphael and Nathaniel.
Alphonse is't my cup of tea, and I especially dislike the spelling. I'm ore used to Alfons which is the most popular spelling where I live.

At first I thought Alphonse was a little funny. It's pretty common for old men where I live, and I've never seen it on anyone under 60.
But it's not such a bad name, on second thought. Love Nathaniel.
Alphonse and Raphael sound nice as a sibset.

Raphael and Alphonse are amazing as a sibset! I think Alphonse might one day feel like his brother got the "cooler" name (or the sexier one, anyway), but I think they are both great :)

Congrats! How exciting for all of you!I like Raphael Jordan, however, I'm just not there with Alphonse (I do like Nathaniel). Having said that, I do think Raphael and Alphonse go well together.

Raphael is a cool name. I know a kid named Rafael. It's a little bit difficult to get people to say it right, in my experience - they like to say ra-fee-el instead of ra-fa-el.Alphonse sounds pompous and effete to me... and invites the nickname Alfie, which I think sounds droll, like a good name for a hamster. It's not a "bad" name though.I guess they're not so strange as siblings.

Congratulations to you and your family!Raphael and Alphonse make a great sibling set. They match each other well being similar lengths and similar styles. And they both contain the l and f sounds but they are very different names.I love the combo Alphonse Nathaniel. I'm not a fan of the name Jordan but I love Raphael. I don't think Jordan is a bad name just really not my style.

I really like it! I love old man names, and I knew a really lovely old man called Alphonse so I have a bit of a soft spot for it. Raphael is one of my favourites.

Raphael and Alphonse are awesome! Alphonse Nathaniel is a bit of a mouthful to say, but it looks great. Congratulations! Do you have other grandchildren besides these two.

Thanks! These are my only two. Hopefully for a while.

First, CONGRATULATIONS!Second, I actually love Alphonse and am thrilled there were some brave parents out there to use it.
As a huge lover of French linguistics, I may be biased.
But, it is a very hardya nd strong name, yet maintains the soft sounds and delicateness of the French. Plus, it means "noble" which is a wonderful meaning (I should know, since my name also means noble, :) )My only concerns are nicknames, as neither Alf or Fonz really are my style (they seem to joking). However, you still have Al, Alphi, etc to fall back on. Or, better yet... just use his full first name. Nathaniel is a good pairing both for rhythm and sound. It grounds the first name a bit as it is more traditional and classic. It gives him great options if, for some reason, he grows up not liking Alphonse. The name is quirky and uncommon altogether, which means that people will remember it - and in turn he may make friends quickly. I really like it. Raphael is a lovely name and Jordan also grounds it well. It makes a good sibset to Alphonse Nathaniel; they are balanced. That said, I am not a huge fan of Raphael myself, but I recognize it for it's strength and classiness all the same.

Thanks for your reply, glad to hear some one likes his name. Alphonse is called Al and Alphie at times but mostly by his full name. I suspect Alphie will be dropped as he gets older. Raphael get called Raphie since he's only two. As with Alphie he'll most likely out grow it. So, right now we have Alphie and Raphie, or Raph and Al.
