Sheppard
What do you think of the name Sheppard on a girl? I've been thinking about it a lot lately. I like it, but it might have to remain a GP name. Is it usable? ETA: About the spelling - I'm familiar with Sheppard as a name (surname, street name). I don't like Shepherd, because it's too much of a word to me. - Hola

I think I actually agree that Sheppard seems like more of a name than Shepherd. I would totally enjoy it on a boy - even if I would never be gutsy enough to go near it myself. As for a girl. It's kind of cute and out-there. Shep feels like she'd be a bit of a rebel outsider. I certainly wouldn't support Sheppard for a girl, but it's not awful either. If you wanted Shep as a nickname, but still wanted to be 'safe,' how about something like
Charlotte Paige nn Shep
Chantelle Paloma nn Shep
Shaelyn Penelope nn Shep
Shannon Piper nn Shep

All I can think of is Shepherd's Pie.

Oh dear, I didn't even make that association. That's another thing to think about.

Hm...I would think the parents were very, very religious. Not a bad thing by any means, but I automatically think, "Girl who dresses conservatively and courts her potential husband at 18" when I hear it.

That's funny because I think of the complete opposite! I think of a punk girl haha.

Sheppard = just awful.
Shepherd = interesting, not totally unusable. But if she is called Shep? "vom," as user BBH would say.

Or worse…"Sheppy". Yikes.

Sheppard is a weird spelling... Just Shepherd is fine. On a boy. Not on a girl. I would never ever use it on a girl.

I think this should stay in the GP pile. I think Shepherd is great for a boy however.

Is there any reason for this spelling? This spelling is a surname and nothing else. The word is spelled Shepherd. It seems like it'd be handsome for a boy; not sure how I feel about it on a girl. I guess I'd have an "oh, interesting!" reaction if I met one, nothing really bad or good.

Sheppard feels more like a name to me, and Shepherd is too much of a word. Thinking about the meaning of 'shepherd', I don't really like the idea of naming a child that - which is the main issue I have with Sheppard because obviously it sounds the same.
